Ecclesiastes 1-3

Daily Devotional from Ecclesiastes 2—

Verse 18
I hated all the toil in which I toil under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to the man who will come after me…

When we put much effort into some task or project that ends up being for nothing, it’s tempting to feel like the author of Ecclesiastes (whom we assume is Solomon) and say “What’s the point?!” But I subscribe to the idea that we should aim to put more into life than we get out of it. If we have children, then our toil should at least help to provide good futures for them, and a legacy of a life well-lived in our families.

What’s “the point” of our work? I don’t agree with Solomon that we should simply ‘Eat, Drink and be Merry.’ Rather, while I do think it is desirable to find joy in the work we do, I believe ultimately the point is to do what we do in a way that honors and glorifies God. Love Him, and love others – visibly, tangibly, audibly – whether you are a butcher, baker or candle-stick maker!
