2 Peter 3

Daily Devotional from 2 Peter 3--

Verses 8-12
But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 11…what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God…

Peter anticipated that we would yearn for Jesus’ return and it would seem like it is not coming soon enough. He reminds us that the Lord is outside of time, so its passing is different to us than to him. He is not “slow to fulfill his promise.” He has a merciful reason: He wants to provide as much time as possible for people to repent and be saved from eternal death. His desire is for every person to be with him forever. But we can hasten his return by living godly lives, waiting patiently, knowing that he is true to his word.

He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
