Judges 17-18

Daily Devotional from Judges 18--

Verses 19b-20
“Is it better for you to be priest to the house of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and clan in Israel?” And the priest's heart was glad. He took the ephod and the household gods and the carved image and went along with the people.

As we read through Judges, we consistently hear 'In those days there was no king in Israel.' Everyone did what was right in his own eyes. I believe this book shows us our need for a king. But I believe this passage shows us our need for a priest, because, compared to Jesus, the one in this story was a joke.

Jonathan, the Levite, was hired at much personal gain (Jud. 17:10), but Jesus serves at much personal loss (Heb. 7:27). Jonathan used a carved image (Jud. 18:20), but Jesus transforms us into his image (2 Cor. 3:18). Jonathan forsook his ministry (Jud. 18:20), but Jesus maintains his (Heb. 7:25). Both men were from Bethlehem (Jud. 17:7-9; Matt. 2:1, 5-6), but only one man went to Calvary (Luk. 23:33). When it comes to priesthood, nobody compares to Jesus, even the best we have to offer.

Spend some time today meditating on Hebrews 4:14-16 and Jesus' wonderful ministry of Priesthood.
