Genesis 23

Daily Devotional from Genesis 23—

Verses 19-20
After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah east of Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. The field and the cave that is in it were made over to Abraham as property for a burying place by the Hittites.

Abraham was living as a foreigner in the land that God had promised him. But here, in this little scene where his wife Sarah had died, Abraham became a property owner in Canaan. The Promise of God was being fulfilled and the land was becoming his.

Sometimes, fulfillment of God’s promises come in unexpected ways. I’m sure that the death of Sarah wasn’t what Abraham had in mind, but neither was having a child in their old age. Abraham was learning to trust God, even in the midst of tragedy.

How has God unexpectedly fulfilled his promises in your life? Will you trust him to take your dark moments and turn them into something filled with hope?
