Numbers 26-27

Daily Devotional from Numbers 27--

Verses 15-17 (NIV)
Moses said to the Lord, “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”

Moses had just been told by God that he is not allowed to go further because of his disobedience (Numbers 20:1-13). Moses could have chosen to be frustrated, to plead with God to show him mercy, to become bitter because what he did was miniscule compared to all the times he did obey. If anyone had cause for God to show mercy, it was Moses. Yet Moses’ response to God was humble, heartfelt, and full of love for Israel. We see him asking God to raise up someone to take his place, who will lead the people of Israel as a shepherd.

It can be so easy to choose bitterness or frustration when things don’t go as planned, or when someone else steps into a place you’ve rightfully earned. But like Moses, may we ask the Holy Spirit to give us the humility to pray for whoever steps in and for the peace needed to trust God’s goodness.
