Deuteronomy 12-13
Daily Devotional from Deuteronomy 12--
Verse 30
Take care that you be not ensnared to follow them, after they have been destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods?—that I also may do the same.’
It’s amazing to me that people could worship false idols of wood, stone, or gold that cannot think, breathe, speak or even move.
It’s maybe easier to understand sun or moon worship - they are much larger, part of the awesome, ordered universe, and exhibit powerful influences on weather, tides, and growing seasons. But they still are objects that cannot even think.
False-idol worshippers today are more likely to idolize things like people, power, money, sex, and drugs - things that can influence the quality of life in both positive and negative ways. But they are still counterfeit gods, and we are not to follow or serve them.
The one true God desires that we worship Him completely, and Him alone. Put Him first!
