1 Samuel 18-20
Daily Devotional from 1 Samuel 18--
Verses 8-9 (CSB)
Saul was furious and resented this song. “They credited tens of thousands to David,” he complained, “but they only credited me with thousands. What more can he have but the kingdom?” So Saul watched David jealously from that day forward.
We all have to be so careful with jealousy. If we do not weed it out of our hearts, it can quickly take root and spread, eventually taking over every aspect of our lives. Saul and David were on the same team. They both served God, both were tasked with leading Israel, both had victories that led to the glory of God and the praise of Israel.
Because Saul let jealousy take root in his heart, it led to his downfall, shame of Israel, and the rejection of his line of kingship. It led to all kinds of sinful behavior--even trying to murder his own son (20:32-33).
Is there any tinge of jealousy in your heart towards another believer? Decide right now to give that to the Lord. Don’t let it grow and take over your life. Pray, repent, confess, and repeat until it’s gone. We’re all on the same team, serving the same God, working for the same purpose-- the spread of the good news of God’s kingdom.
