1 Samuel 30-31
Daily Devotional from 1 Samuel 30—
Verse 6a
And David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because all the people were bitter in soul…
Recap: these men who gathered to David were “in distress, in debt, and bitter in soul” (22:2). And during the time they all lived in Ziklag, they’d raid the neighbors, murdering and plundering (27:8-9). So, now that they get a taste of their own medicine, what’s their response? They spend the day crying their eyes out and then decide they should murder their leader! As if killing David will bring back their families??
It’s interesting that these men are described twice as being “bitter in soul”. For some reason, they each had a root of bitterness in their soul, and a bitter root will produce bitter fruit. Sometimes that fruit looks like taking our frustrations out on brothers and sisters in Christ. Let’s not let bitter roots grow in our soul, and instead follow Paul’s encouragement in Ephesians 4:31-32 to “Let all bitterness and…anger and…slander be put away from you… Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”
