Mark 13
Mark 13:1
Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!
Looking back on it now, what a odd thing to say. Wonderful stones and buildings? You’re showing Jesus your wonderful stones and buildings? Sometimes we get a little carried away.
As we would expect, Jesus wasn’t impressed. To him they seemed like trivial matters.
Years ago, my wife and I went to the Roman ruins. We saw the Coliseum, the Pantheon, the Arch of Titus, and the Roman Forum. In their day they must have been something to behold. Today they are merely broken shells of their former glory.
So, don’t be surprised if Jesus deflates your notion of grandeur. Houses, cars, jewelry, boats, and buildings are all nice things to have, but they are secondary, and honestly superfluous, to the accomplishment of God’s purposes and plans.
Be careful with the things the charm the eye.
