1 Peter 2
1 Peter 2:17
Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.
This was written when Nero was emperor – the man who set Rome on fire and blamed the Christians. The church suffered terribly under the man’s rule and here is Peter exhorting us to honor such a one because that’s just what Christians do. We honor everyone. Not just the ones who look like us, act like us, and believe like us. We honor people because it’s the best way to proclaim the excellencies of him who called us out of darkness (verse 9). In a politically-charged climate like ours this is especially important.
