Leviticus 27-Numbers 1
Daily Devotional from Leviticus 27--
Verse 21
But the field, when it is released in the jubilee, shall be a holy gift to the Lord, like a field that has been devoted. The priest shall be in possession of it.
Have you ever hit the reset button on a piece of electronic equipment that was no longer functioning properly?
When the Israelites reached the Promised Land, God distributed land to the 12 tribes. Over the years, as bad things happened and people needed money, they might have needed to sell their land or even become indentured servants.
Every 50th year, in the Year of Jubilee, land was to be returned to its original owners. The land was to be left fallow - no sowing and reaping, just living off what the land produced in previous years. Indentured slaves were released and returned to their families. It was to be a time of rest and dependence on God, release, restoration and celebration. It was God’s reset button.
Jesus, announcing His ministry in the synagogue, proclaimed a jubilee year (Lk 4:9). This is what His ministry (his life, death and resurrection) would accomplish. It would bring about good news - release from captivity, restoration, dependance on God and celebration.
What wonderful benefits we have as Christians!
