Deuteronomy 14-15

Daily Devotional from Deuteronomy 15--

Verses 7-8 (CSB)
If there is a poor person among you, one of your brothers within any of your city gates in the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother. Instead, you are to open your hand to him and freely loan him enough for whatever need he has.

I love the way Our Father is intentional about loving and taking care of those around us. What I love about the Old Testament Law is that it isn’t necessarily given for morality’s sake, but the people of Israel are to live according to these laws in order to be ambassadors of God’s kingdom in the world around them. They were to be set apart—showing what flourishing life really looks like.

God cares about those who are poor. Societies that don’t follow God tend to treat their poor as if they’re not human. God’s way is the opposite. Like the Israelites, we are to live differently, lives set apart as God’s people. Which means that our attitude toward the poor among us will reveal whether we are ambassadors of King Jesus or ambassadors of another king.
