Deuteronomy 22-23

Daily Devotional from Deuteronomy 22—

Verses 1-4
You shall not see your brother's ox or his sheep going astray and ignore them. You shall take them back to your brother. And if he does not live near you and you do not know who he is, you shall bring it home to your house, and it shall stay with you until your brother seeks it. Then you shall restore it to him. And you shall do the same with his donkey or with his garment, or with any lost thing of your brother's, which he loses and you find; you may not ignore it. You shall not see your brother's donkey or his ox fallen down by the way and ignore them. You shall help him to lift them up again.

God wanted his people to live in harmony and part of that happens when we look out for each other. He was teaching his children how to be ‘others-focused’ and how to treat each other how they’d want to be treated. You see a brother in need; you help him out.

Jesus took this two steps further though: He tells us in Matthew 5 that if someone takes our shirt we should give it, and give our coat as well. If someone forces us to go one mile, we should go not just one but two. That’s one step, but Jesus isn’t just referring to going the extra mile for our brothers and sisters, but also for our enemies. For those we love and those who don't love us, the love of God compels us to meet them where they are at, and then go above and beyond because that’s the kind of love Jesus lavishes on us!
