1 Chronicles 11-12
Daily Devotional from 1 Chronicles 11--
Verses 18-19
Then the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and took it and brought it to David. But David would not drink it. He poured it out to the Lord and said, “Far be it from me before my God that I should do this. Shall I drink the lifeblood of these men? For at the risk of their lives they brought it.” Therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men.
First David complains about not having water and then when the mighty men get him some water, he dumps it out! How disrespectful can you be? It doesn’t really offer any word into how the mighty men felt about it.
But David's action, I believe, also shows that he is repentant, maybe he knew he shouldn't have asked for it in the first place. Sometimes we desire things that are at the cost of others. We can be so self-centered. I know I have been many times. But thank God for grace, and when we repent he hears us and even shows us favor. Let us do well by our neighbors, but even when we don’t, praise God for grace.
