Colossians 4
Daily Devotional from Colossians 4--
Verse 6
Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person.
How we respond to others, especially in conflict, reveals much about our character. I’m so glad that Jesus offers us grace because all of us fail in being gracious in our speech.
Here, Paul is encouraging us to let our words be like salt, bringing out the best in others. When something isn’t salted, it’s flavorless and we generally don’t want to eat it. We speak graciously because the tongue is a rudder and the things we say will either build up a relationship or tear it down.
When we take time to respond, especially when it is a difficult conversation, we are working to preserve the relationship, love our neighbor well, and grow in faith and life walking in and with the Holy Spirit. It becomes one way we begin to treat others like Jesus treats us and testifies of his saving power in our lives.
