Genesis 13-15
Daily Devotional from Genesis 15–
Verses 17-18a
When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land.”
God actually took the time to walk through the carcasses to make a covenant. Walking through the torn carcasses was symbolic in ancient times and it was God saying that if He doesn’t keep His promise may He be torn in two just like these animals. And God kept his promise too, even when Abram was terribly in the wrong. Abram didn’t deserve it but God kept His Word. The same goes for us; we aren't deserving, yet God sent His promised son to die for us so that by faith we may be saved. This was by no work of our own, none of us would be saved if it were up to us. So if God makes you a promise He is going to keep it. Trust and wait on Him.
