1 Samuel 6-8

Daily Devotional from 1 Samuel 8--

Verses 19-20
But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel. And they said, “No! But there shall be a king over us, that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.”

Israel had seen God defend and fight their battles for them, still they wanted a physical king like the other nations. Even with the miraculous victories they had witnessed, they would rather be like everyone else. When Samuel warned of the troubles of having a king, they ignored him, so God let them have their way. As we will see in our reading of the Old Testament, the kings of Israel caused great division and trouble overall for the Israelites.

It’s easy to want to join with the people around us in what they put their hope in. Some people hope in government leaders, some in horoscopes and the stars, and others in celebrities and activists. As Christ’s bride, He has set us apart and He alone is our firm foundation. He is the only One that we can trust completely. Today, let’s re-evaluate what or who we are putting our hope and trust in, and put Jesus in the center of our lives.
