1 Samuel 12-14

Daily Devotional from 1 Samuel 12—

Verse 21
And do not turn aside after empty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty.

We were created with an empty spot in our heart. We feel it, all our lives long: a longing, an ache, a desire for completion. We think, if we can just fill that spot, we will have arrived. Sometimes the longing is more intense, sometimes subtler. But it’s always there. And we spend our lives trying to fill that hole.

We think we can fill it by looking good, having that perfect relationship or career, having money, buying nice things. We try food, vacations, novels, television and games, sports, shopping and hobbies. None of these are inherently bad, when recognized for what they are: empty, temporary distractions.

They cannot fill the hole. The hole is God-shaped. Only God can fill it. Only He can complete our heart, soothe the ache, fulfill the longing. The next time you feel something like that emptiness or longing, turn to Jesus. Spend time with him. Let him complete your heart. All day, Every day.
