Jeremiah 21-22

Daily Devotional from Jeremiah 21--

Verses 1-2
This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord when King Zedekiah sent Pashhur son of Malchijah and the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to Jeremiah, asking, “Inquire of the Lord on our behalf, since King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon is making war against us. Perhaps the Lord will perform for us something like all his past wondrous works so that Nebuchadnezzar will withdraw from us.”

As king, Zedekiah was supposed to lead the people in following God, but we know from 2 Kings 24 that he did evil in the sight of the Lord. Now he’s hoping God will be merciful and rescue him? Zedekiah didn’t seek God’s help in humility, but arrogance. He just wanted to win the war.

Sometimes we can behave similarly. We live like God isn’t around, ignoring the Holy Spirit, ignoring scripture. We let bitterness take root, we let distraction reign, we gossip, we…. Well, we sin.

So God tells Zedekiah “No” and commands them to submit to Babylon to be saved--which sounds crazy!

God was looking for humility in Zedekiah. Are we ready to listen and do what God asks--even when it sounds crazy? Or do we try to use God’s power for our own gain?

Be honest with yourself and with God, you’ll find your heart softened and ready for the Spirit to move.
