2 Timothy 2

Daily Devotional from 2 Timothy 2—

Verses 4-7, 19-20
No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.

As soldiers, we are to be focused on pleasing our Commander, not indulging fleshly desires. As athletes, we are to run the race with integrity, in accordance with the scriptural guidelines given to us. As farmers, we are to work hard, trusting in the Lord for our sustenance and anticipating a great harvest. We are to meditate on these examples, for the Holy Spirit will give our minds the ability to grasp the truths embedded in them.

Dear Lord, empower us to be obedient, rejecting all that would get in the way of following after you. We want to please you! Help us to work tirelessly to expand your kingdom, knowing our provision is in you. May we apply our minds to examples in scripture, so you can give us understanding in every circumstance. Amen
